Loukoumades with Star Anise

INGREDIENTS 

1 1/4 cup warmed milk

1 1/2tsp yeast

2 1/4 cup flour 

1/4 cup sugar

1/4tsp freshly ground star anise

1/8tsp scant black pepper 

3/4tsp salt 

FOR THE TOPPING:

1/2 cup honey

1/8 t ground star anise 

1/4 cup chopped pistachios

 

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Whisk together flour, salt, and sugar and set aside. In a medium bow, combine the warmed milk and yeast- stir and set aside. 

 

STEP 2

Combine the flour and milk mixtures together. and mix. The dough will be sticky- do not over mix. Cover with a clean towel and set aside in a warm place to rise for 1-2 hours or until the dough has doubled in size. 

 

STEP 3

Add 4 inches of oil into a frying pot and allow the oil to reach a temperature of 325 degrees F. Form the dough into small round donuts by using an oiled tablespoon or cookie scoop and drop into the oil. Fry until they are golden brown on all sides and transfer to a paper towel-lined tray. 

 

STEP 4

To serve, pour honey over with a dash of star anise and chopped pistachios while donuts are warm- ENJOY!
